Fresh, seasonal & very local produce

Follow the seasons with very locally produced fresh fruit & vegetables grown in our own Apley Walled Garden, helping you keep your food miles low & know your food’s provenance. Our Head Gardener grows unusual varieties of fruit & vegetables for Apley Farm Shop which can’t be found easily elsewhere. When we can’t grow it ourselves, we search for the best quality locally grown produce within a radius of approx 30 miles. We also have a strong eye for price & make sure our vegetables are excellent value for money.

January in Apley Walled Garden

Jerusalem artichokes, beetroot, rhubarb coming through. Bonfires – tidying up & ground clearance of brambles after the winter.

February in Apley Walled Garden

Lots of clearance & ground preparation outdoors when the weather allows. On wet days, the soil in the glasshouses & polytunnels has been fertilised with well-rotted horse manure.

March in Apley Walled Garden

Lots of ground preparation has now been completed. Broad beans, pea shoots & cress have been sown in rock wool. Trying to keep the mice away !

Back into production

In Feb 2013, our primary objective was to bring the garden back into production, more than a restoration project. The garden has become a 21st century horticultural business again within its 18th century walls, generating produce for Apley Farm Shop & an income to help stop the otherwise inevitable decline of this historic garden.

Heritage varieties

We specialise in growing heritage varieties of fruit & veg in Apley Walled Garden. When information has been available, we’ve grown varieties which even grew in this very garden in the past. We enjoy bringing new products to our customers’ plates – old (heritage) but new to them.

Phil Allen is back as Head Gardener

We’re delighted to welcome back Phil Allen as Head Gardener of Apley Walled Garden, after a short spell away on ‘sabbatical’. He’s increased his wealth of knowledge & is back to continue the amazing work he began here in Feb 2013. Contact Phil directly on headgardener@apleyestate.com or 07740 74 39 66 or via Apley Farm Shop 01952 5812 002.

Volunteer in Apley Walled Garden

We’re always keen to hear from anyone who would like to volunteer in our magical & historic walled garden, which is otherwise strictly private, in the heart of the Apley Estate. It helps – but isn’t vital – if you have some gardening experience !

Grown to Order service

The ‘Contract Grown Service‘ from Apley Walled Garden gives chefs the ultimate control over the source of their ingredients. It’s the combination of deliciously grown, chemical free, using bio-ethical methods which give the extra taste factor.

Crop Reports & The Chefs’ Pantry

We invite chefs to use Apley Walled Garden as their primary source of ingredients, where they can tell us exactly what they need, when & in what quantities. Using our Crop Report, we let chefs know what we have available. We have regularly supplied local Shropshire restaurants including the Hundred House in Norton, Telford Campus of the University of Wolverhampton and the King & Thai in Broseley.

Veg boxes

Apley Walled Garden veg boxes can be bought directly in Apley Farm Shop or ordered from our online DeliShop for national next day delivery or Click & Collect.
