Apley Farm Shop is an award winning business at the heart of the Apley Estate, Shropshire, UK, owned & managed by Lord Hamilton. It was developed in March 2011 from old farm buildings near Norton on the A442, sympathetically restored, acknowledging the history held within its brick walls & oak beams, whilst emphasising the buildings’ special features & heritage.
However, Farm Shop is a misnomer: we’re so much more than what those two words usually imply. We’re a rural shopping village, a collection of shops. We’re not a farm, though we’re set in the heart of an historic country estate. Our courtyard has 6 independent businesses surrounded by the Playbarn, Cafe & a very beautiful Food Hall directly run by Apley. Our Food Hall includes a Butchery & Delicatessen. Apley Bakery produces handmade cakes & puddings 7 days pw. Not forgetting our Conference Room, Skylark Nature Trail & Dog Park. Plus we run 13 events annually. We like to think we’re helping to redefine those two words ‘farm shop’.
The estate has been farmed for centuries & the shop was opened by the current owner Lord [Gavin] Hamilton of Dalzell, 5th baron, who inherited the title & the estate in 2006 from his father. Its focus is offering local food from local producers to local people.
Apley Walled Garden was brought back into production in Feb 2013 to supply the shop & its Creamery Cafe, as well as other local restaurants. The estate’s own beef is sold on the shop’s butchery counter. Production of Apley cheese, made 1956-65 in the building which is now the cafe, rebegan in 2014 after a gap of 49 yrs.
Seasonal, fresh & local produce
The Farm Shop aims to source some of the tastiest food & drinks from our own estate, tenant farms, local suppliers & small food producers, keeping it as local as possible.
The Butcher sells meat direct from Apley Estate, local or tenant farms.
The Delicatessen stocks cheeses, freshly prepared pies, pastries & sausage rolls. Apley scotch eggs, handmade ready meals, tarts & handmade pâtés made at the Farm Shop.
Apley’s Corn Loft Conference room is a charming venue for small business meetings, private functions, group visits & fun-filled family events.
Pigg’s Playbarn has solar panels & the whole Apley Farm Shop site is heated by a wood chip boiler. These form part of an ongoing renewable energy programme that encourages self-sufficient, environmentally-friendly power generation using wood from the Estate.
Our philosophy is simple: Fresh, local, seasonal. We aim to source primarily from the estate, secondly from the estate’s tenant farmers, thirdly from Shropshire producers & then from other quality suppliers within the UK wherever possible. Inevitably it is sometimes necessary to go a little further to source food when demand is high & local sources cannot supply us, but we always aim to work with small, quality British producers.
