Having spent many years donating to multiple local individuals, families, organisations & schools, we decided to support only two main charities – one very local & one international. They’re both doing marvellous work & they’re very grateful for the donations (via collection boxes at the cash tills) which they’ve received from Apley Farm Shop’s customers over the years.
Cavalier Centre – Riding for the Disabled (RDA)
The local branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) opened
a huge new indoor riding centre in April 2019. For approx 4 years, many local children helped fundraise for it. They were all invited to the opening by HRH Princess Anne. It provides all year round (whatever the British weather) facilities for disabled children to enjoy, especially in carriage driving.
Nothing describes their work better than this wonderful poem by John Anthony Davies:
I saw a child who couldn’t walk
Sit on a horse, laugh and talk.
Then ride it through a field of daisies
And yet he could not walk unaided.
I saw a child no legs below
Sit on a horse and make it go
Through wood of green and places he had never been
to sit and stare, except from a chair.
I saw a child who could only crawl
Mount a horse and sit up tall;
Then put it through degrees of paces
And laugh at the wonder on our faces.
I saw a child born into strife,
Take up and hold the reins of life
And that same child was heard to say,
‘Thank God for showing me the way’.
